Come, You Who Are Blessed

A Sermon for Christ the King Sunday

November 22, 2009

Christ the King Sunday

Ezekiel 34:11-20, Matthew 25:31-46

Next Sunday is the start of a new church year, the first Sunday of Advent. That means that today is Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday of the Church Year.

This Sunday is the day when we reset the liturgical clock. After having gone through a whole year of celebrating the birth, life, teachings, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, and the birth of the church through the presence of the Holy Spirit, we speak of end times and then start the whole thing over again.

This is the Sunday when, after living through another year of births and deaths, joys and sorrows, sunshine and snowstorm, good times and bad, in our families and in our church family, as well as the family that we call humankind, we pause to say thank you to a mighty God. More… »

Sermon: On Becoming a Christian

On Becoming a Christian

Acts 9:1-9

1 Corinthians 13:11-12

Listen to the message…

You may have heard this story about Paul on his journey to Damascus.   It is one of the most famous of all “conversion” stories.  Paul became a Christian through this overwhelmingly powerful and intensely personal experience while on the road leading to Damascus. His was a 180 degree turn-around, a conversion in the classic sense, as he went from arresting Christians to learning from them, from persecuting followers of Christ to being a follower of Christ. Paul’s story is a great story, perhaps the most-loved conversion story in the Scripture, and it will get us started today as we think about the process of becoming Christian.

From Sunday’s Bulletin… an invitation to worship.

People of God, gather near and worship your God!

We have traveled far. We have come from the forests of fear and the mountains of anxiety, from the stormy seas of temptation and the dessert of selfishness. We have known the dark valleys of addiction and the endless plains of loneliness. We have walked the rocky path of anger and the windy road of uncertainty. We have traveled far to come to this place today.

God meet us here.

God meet us here! Meet us in our worship and draw us into your presence in these moments! For we have come to worship you, and we leave behind all that has gone before, seeking only to be present with you, here and now. Amen.

CROP Walk check arrived and given to the Food Bank

The annual check for the Food Bank from our CROP Walk in May is $1409 this year!

The Seward Memorial UMC is the mover and shaker behind the community’s annual CROP Walk. We appreciate tthe work of folks in every church making it happen together… it is truly on f the great eceumenical events of the year here oin our little town… and the proceeds of all this effort goes tot he local food pantry, the He Will Provide Food Bank. One fourth of the funds raised in the Church World Service sponsored walk returns to the local community to fight poverty and hunger, and He Will Provide is the designated receiver of these funds each year. In this photo, walk organizer Karen Chase and walk treasurer Nancy Osborne show off the check for $1409 presented this week to the Food Bank!
